Area IV Young Riders Earn Team Gold at NAJYRC

Lily Geelan and Melanie Rousseau represented Area IV at the 2017 North American Junior Young Rider Championships in Kalispell, MT. The pair competed at the CICOY** Level and were partnered with Cornelia Dorr from Area I on a scramble team. These young ladies brought home Team Gold in the CICOY**.

Lily Geelan and her 14 year old Polish Warmblood, Luksor, returned to NAJYRC at the CIC** level this year after representing Area IV in 2016 at the CCI*. Lily is a senior at Orono High School in Independence, MN. She spent the winter working with Judy McCoy in North Carolina, Peter Gray in Florida and spring training with Sara Kozumplik Murphy in Berryville, VA. She and Luksor won the 2017 CIC** at Roebke's Run in June. They earned a top 20 finish at the Virginia CIC** and the Fork CIC** as well as third place at Rocking Horse Intermediate and a victory in the Intermediate at Otter Creek. Fiona Cotter, an Area IV NAJYRC former competitor, supported Lily as her groom at this year's event.

Melanie Rousseau and her 11 year old thoroughbred, Sullivan also represented Area IV at the CICYO**. Melanie represented Area IV in 2013 and 2014. She is a graduate of Barrington High School in Barrington, IL. She is attending Roanoke College studying international business. She was a working student for Peter Gray in 2015. She and Sullivan completed Rocking Horse, Roebke's Run and Carolina International at the Intermediate Level and had a strong 11th place finish at Fair Hill CIC**. Elizabeth Clarke was been chosen to assist Melanie as official groom for the 2017 NAJYRC competition. Elizabeth groomed for Melanie in 2013 and 2014 as well.


2017 was a family affair for Area IV competitors.


Jennifer Rousseau served as the Area IV team coach. Jennifer is a Level III ICP instructor based in Barrington Hills, IL at L'Espirit Equestrian. Jennifer is an experienced competitor and is the mother of Melanie Rousseau.

Marybeth Geelan, Lily's mother, took on the role of chef d'equipe. She attended numerous organization and informational meetings to keep the team up to date with important changes.


Congratulations to Melanie, Lily, Marybeth, Jennifer, Fiona and Elizabeth as well as their Area I teammate Cornelia.
